Sailor Moon S Part 2 DVD Review

17th September 2017 at 7:58 pm

Dear Chibi,

Over the last couple of weeks, I’ve been spending my free time indulging in the newly released Sailor Moon S Part 2 on DVD :D Madman has also recently announced we’ll be getting the 90s Sailor Moon on Blu-Ray for the first time ever! The first 3 seasons will be available as complete Blu-Ray sets starting from 6th December 2017, and the remaining sets will roll out along with the DVDs. SuperS and Sailor Stars (the final 2 seasons) will use newly created masters from Japan for both the DVD and BD sets. Ahhhhh, I can’t wait to see how these look :D!!

For the meantime, here are my thoughts on Sailor Moon S Part 2! (Check out my Sailor Moon S Part 1 review here)

Sailor Moon S DVD Part 2 Madman

“Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune’s search for the three talismans has led them to become targets of the Witches 5, the Death Busters’ beautiful and deadly agents, who also seek the talismans to summon the powerful Holy Grail! Now, Sailor Moon and the other Sailor Guardians are on a race against time to save their friends’ lives and prevent the power of the Holy Grail from falling into the wrong hands.

Meanwhile, Chibi-Usa befriends a young girl named Hotaru, whose mysterious power quickly attracts the attention of both friend and foe. Is there a connection between Hotaru and the enemy? And who is the Messiah of Silence that is said to bring destruction? Will Sailor Moon’s new power be enough to protect the world from the impending apocalypse?”

Sailor Moon S Part 2 continues with the “monster of the day” formula with the Witches 5 (primarily Mimete) finding a random target each episode, and the Sailor Guardians saving the day. However, that’s more of a side story. The main focus is finding the true Messiah and whether or not it’s okay to sacrifice one person’s life if it means saving the whole world. I definitely found the idea intriguing and really enjoyed the drama that unfolded between the Outer and Inner Guardians. (I admit, I was mostly Team Outers, but I adore Usagi’s pure heart and innocence)

10 Guardians and a pretty power-up. I think this Season’s spoiled us!

Packaging

Oh, how I love the cover art. Seriously, I’d buy a wall-scroll with this image on it! This volume features Sailor Chibi Moon on the side and back cover. I was actually expecting Sailor Uranus, but Chibimoon is appropriate too XD.

My mail from Madman are usually well wrapped in a box with plenty of padding inside. Unfortunately when I opened up the case, the middle plastic holding the case has already snapped off :< You can see it the the photo below:

Not a huge problem since the plastic case is relatively inexpensive to replace, but it was a bit disappointing. Everything else looks lovely though!

DVD Menus

Similar to the other volumes, the menu screen is pretty basic with the disc art image featured. ‘Moonlight Densetsu’ is playing in loop.

What happened to her massive back bow? XD

The Sailor Pluto and Sailor Saturn image is different to the one on the disc.

The “Extras” contain some anime trailers and textless opening and closing footage. Thankfully we get the third version Opening which was not included in part 1. Unfortunately, these footage are not remastered and fairly low quality :(

Screenshots

As usual, the episodes have excellent video quality. I wonder how much nicer the BD masters will be??

Sailor Moon S - Sailor Uranus & Neptune

Sailor Moon S - Usagi

Love the style of this scene…

Sailor Moon S - Hotaru & Chibiusa

Hotaru <33

Sailor Moon S - Messiah of Silence

Sailor Moon S - Sailor Neptune & Uranus

Things getting serious….

Sailor Moon S - Sailor Senshi

Sailor Moon S - Sailor Moon

..and emotional </3

Sailor Moon S - Final Battle

Sailor Moon S - Sailor Saturn

All in all, Sailor Moon S Part 2 has some damn good episodes, both suspenseful and emotional. It also has its fair share of filler eps (which might be a turn off for some), but hey~ that’s the 90s Sailor Moon we grew up with :’D. I found them to be nostalgic and hilarious. I thoroughly enjoyed the re-watch, especially with the original Japanese audio. I am sure Viz Media’s English cast has done a decent job, but I love Megumi Ogata’s Haruka too much…

Ohhh…Can’t believe we’re almost made it to SuperS! *_* Wait for me, Pegasus!

The BD masters are exactly what was aired in Japan recently on TV, so the quality is better than Viz’s release, but it’s still just an upscale of the DVD version… so expect smoothing and line enhancing… I wish it could be a proper HD master, but sadly, Toei suck… while Cardcaptor Sakura gets a brand new 4K scanned master…

    Don’t forget iTunes as well

Ah I love reading these reviews~
The packaging on these sets are so nice! They actually make me regret not getting the limited editions, I really want those collector’s boxes XD
I actually have a question though, my copy had an episode that kept skipping on the second disc. I traded it in for another one but the new one had the same problem! Did yours have anything like that? (I ended up ordering another one and getting a refund, but I don’t actually know how many copies are defective d: Hopefully this new one will be fine ^^)

    • Chibi says:

      Hi Amber!
I don’t think I experienced that skipping issue you mentioned :O

      • Amber says:

        Huh, that’s weird :0
I just received the new one and it’s faulty too >_<
Can I ask where you got your copy from? Might have to try there I guess, seeing as your copy is ok.
