Prisoner of Love

Dear Chibi,

For the past few nights I’ve been watching a j-drama called ‘Last Friends’ . I haven’t seen something this emotional since NANA. (Thanks Somps~)

Last_Friends

Fake displays of strength and avarice have become meaningless
I’ve been in love with you since that day
When I’m free, with time to spare, there’s no life in being alone
I’m just a prisoner of love
Just a prisoner of love

Oh… Just a little more
Don’t you give up
Oh don’t ever abandon me
If the cruelty of reality tries to tear us apart
We’ll be drawn more closely to one another
Somehow, somehow, I have a feeling we’ll be able to stand firm
I’m just a prisoner of love
Just a prisoner of love..

Last Friends looks into the issues of domestic violence, gender identity disorder and trauma. The pain and agony the characters go through left a really deep impression on me- I found myself crying in every episode. It made me feel very depressed, but at least I’m being depressed for something fictional and not depressed with my own life. It’s these kind of dramas especially when I just wanna sit in my room and watch it alone :)

When I started watching this drama, I noticed the main two characters had a striking resemblance to Sailor Moon’s  Haruka and Michiru. Here, Ruka is a tomboy, a racer in the motocross. She is a lesbian. Haruka’ of Sailor Moon is a tomboy and a racer in the motocross. She’s also a lesbian. They both have very similar tough and stubborn attitudes. Their love interest? They’re both called Michiru! Although the similarities had nothing to do with me liking this drama, I had to point it out-  though the creator has denied it being influenced by Sailor Moon in any way. *not convinced* XD

I was most drawn to the character of Ruka – the boyishly charming  racer portrayed by Ueno Juri. Her character was both intriguing and complex and she managed to pull it off really well. When I realised she was also the actress for the  super cutesy and clumsy Nodame- I was very shocked! I didn’t realise they were the same person! Now I feel like giving Nodame Cantabile ago again just because of this. Two other actors I like in this drama are also characters in Nodame…hmm.

A character I absolutely despise is Sousuke- the abusive boyfriend of Michiru. I cannot understand this nutcase. Seriously. How can he claim to love her when he continuously use violence against her? He takes away her freedom, her friends, and everything that means anything to her. He’s just a selfish control freak. I don’t understand the logic in this~I don’t WANT to understand this behavior. It’s just not justifiable. It does make the story interesting though ..he gives me the creeps every time I see his face…@_@

Overall, it was a good drama. Too bad I’ve reached the end already ;_:

Hehe glad you liked it. :) Definitely something you’d want to watch alone. Its not often that you find a drama that is able to make you captivate u like that.

Taeko Asano (Last Friends screenwriter) said in this interview that he wasn’t influenced by Sailor Moon but personally there are too coincidences to be true!

To me, this image of the ribbon is a wink at Sailor Moon:

I wonder if Naoko Takeuchi saw Last Friends? And if she did, what could be her opinion about the characters Ruka and Michiru!
